As of 2018, the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) had counted 2.6 million libraries worldwide. 110, 783 of these are on the African continent and 49,172 are in Kenya.
Since 2017, Book Bunk Trust has been working to restore three of these libraries - McMillan Memorial Library, and its branches in Kaloleni and Makadara. While Book Bunk’s restoration work is currently only focused on three of these libraries, a knowledge of these libraries and their place in the larger landscape of libraries they exist in is crucial to creating truly connected spaces. Unfortunately, little data exists about these libraries.
Our library ecosystem research project seeks to gather data on public libraries in Kenya. This phased out project seeks to gather information about these libraries (location, history, patronage, collections, etc) and use this information to create a digital, interactive and verified map of Kenya's libraries that can be accessed by the public for free.
